Everyone please bare with me. I am a heavy civil contractor in Texas, concrete underground utilities and dirtwork is my expertise, electrical is not.

I am in the planning stages of building my family's dream home. I recently came across a good deal on a 50 kw cat single phase generator. I plan on using the generator for back up power to the new house. In the mean time "about one year or more" I would like to install it on my existing home. I plan on using licensed electricians and pulling all necessay permits.

I would just like to know before I start requesting bids if this is a good idea or is this generator just to large for a 100 amp service?

I forgot to mention this generator also came with an asco 225 amp automatic transfer switch I would like to use.

You certainly won't have any load issues, you can run everything in the home full blast on a genset this size.

Certain gensets have minimum load requirements for various reasons.

Best to check the manufacturer's specs on the unit your interested in.

Unless your new home is very small, or no chance of any future additions, I would recommend a min 200 amp service.

I was just looking to see if this was possible until the new house is complete.

The new house is going to be about 4200 s.f. and I am definetely looking into a 200 amp service or possibly a 400 amp. That is If the power company lets me, seems they only offer up to 200 amp in the residential end.

Usually the power company will supply you with whatever size service you require, if physically possible on their grid. After all, you will be paying for it.
