10 yr Dachshund drinking & urinating A LOT
Anyone know what could cause my dog to start drinking a lot and urinating in the house?
No strong smell, color is clear to faint yellow. He whines when he has to go but I can't always get to him quick enough.
He is blind and had successful back surgery on 10/31/08.

I would say he needs to see a Vet - he very well may be having kidney failure problems, based on the strong smell, not the sudden urge to urinate.

Yes, you need to take him back to see the vet. It could be anything from a urinary tract infection, bladder infection, kidney failure (as said above) or several other things going on. If he is whining, he is trying to tell you that he is in some sort of pain. I would get him to the vet asap! You need to pinpoint the nature of his problem. Poor little guy sounds like he's been through a lot! :(

Years ago, my 10 year old heeler did the same thing. She drank almost 3 gallons of water in a 24 hour period until I could get her to the Vet. It turned out to be Cushings disease. This is a malfunction of the pituitary gland resulting in too much cortisone production. From what I rememeber, it's quite common to smaller, hyper dogs. The vet Rx'd a treatment and with daily meds, she lived with it for another six years.
Good luck!

One thing that was overlooked was the recent back surgery. It could possibly be somehow related. Also, I assume he is, or was on pain meds. This could also be a factor, and needs to be addressed.
