Here's my question from my Gr. 9 math homework:
Use an equation to solve this problem:
1 kg of peanuts costs $4
1 kg of pecans costs $22
You want 23 kg of mixed nuts worth $236. How many kilograms of each type of nut should you use?

I know the final answer to the question, but I have no idea how to make an algebraic equation for it. HELP!

Let x = kg of peanuts.

Let y = kg of pecans.

For the cost we have:

4x+22y=236

For the total kg we have:

x+y=23

There are the two equations. Solve away.

let x = mass of nuts
pecans= 23 -x
for the cost we have:
$4x for nuts
$506-22x for pecants
the equation is:
4x+506-22x=236
-18x = -270
x = 15
the mass of nut is 15kg and pecant is 8kg:)
