Hello

I'm freaking out a bit. My ceiling light and fan comes on in the middle of the night ALL BY THEMSELVES! Some times it's the fan (going FULL speed) and some times it's the light (light or bright). Last night was the super bright light that woke my husband and me. He is more practical then me and says it most be something in the wiring and we should call a electrician. I think we should call Ghost Busters. Please prove me wrong.

If there is a wall switch that controls the light fixture, it most likley needs to be replaced.

Do you ever hear buzzing or a cracking sound coming from the switch?

When a light fixture, or any electrical device operates, voltage is reaching the fixture. The trick is to find where the voltage is coming from.

Light switches are normally less than 50 cents, and are very easy to replace. I'd try that first. If that doesn't take care of the problem, you may need to open the fixture up at the ceiling. It is possible that there could be a wiring issue in the box in the ceiling, if this is the case it should be easily corrected with just a small investment in time. But you'd have to inspect it first and check the wiring, look for loose connections, etc.

Or if you don't have a light switch, and the fan is just operated by the pull chain on the fain itself, then the problem is most likley in the pull chain of the light fixture itself. Both problems are easiliy corrected, new pull chain switches can be purchased at many department stores and hardware stores across the land.

If it's a cheap fan (less than $50) it might be easier and cheaper in the long run (savings in money, time and labor) to just replace the fan. But I'd definitely check the wall switch first.

Does this fan have a remote control, if so change the dip switch settings in the remote and in the receiver. I think you are getting a stray signal from a radio or even a nearby neighbor's remote.

Mine did the same thing for years then while we were away it must have come on at high speed... when we got home the whole fan dislodged from the ceiling & was on our bed! Thank GOD we weren't home! Would never buy a ceiling fan again.

That's why rated boxes are needed for fan and fixtures. I have never seen a fan drop out of a rated box. It's the box not the fan
