Wiring a furnace thermostat to manually operate the furnace fan

I have two wires connected to my furnace thermostat. There is a place labeled G on the thermostat. Can I simply run a wire from the G terminal on my thermostat to the terminal labeled G on my furnace fan relay to operate the fan separately?
Thermostat turns on furnace and then thermostat shuts back to HOLD

I believe that when we re-run the program with the correct date and time, if the temp has to go up, the furnace runs until it gets the appropriate temp, then it turns off and when it does that, the thermostat also turns off going to the HOLD state.:confused:

Lennox furnace doesn't work after changing out thermostat to an Aprilaire model 8870 communicating thermostat. Have triple checked the most obvious and wiring at both ends.
