If flame current is present on the sensing circuit at an inappropriate time, the control will assume it is due to a gas valve not closing when it should. This particular problem has great potential to get sticky and expensive for the DIY'er who may not know what to look for, and start replacing parts without proper troubleshooting. An experienced pro will be able to spot any "deception" on the part of the self-diagnostics.

If you think your bills going to be $100 or more I recommend a Honeywell or Robert Shaw/Grayson, Retrofit kit! About $300, and includes a new gas valve, ignition module and pilot assembly, a basic overhaul of the units entirety, sans limits and proving devices as pressure switches etc.

A carb problem would not be helped by a jump start, the light staying on makes me suspect the ignition switch, but again jump starting would not help this unless the amp draws were so great it required the amperage capacity of 2 batteries, taking an amp draw on the starter while its cranking will give you an idea if its close to the batteries potential, starters can get bad spots that require quite a bit of amperage to spin, There is a dead mans switch under the seat I have seen cause issues as well.
