    2001 Lexus ES300 won't stay started
I drove my car in the morning. In the evening it will not start without me putting my foot on the gas. When I release my foot, it shuts down. 1/2 tank of gas and drove it all week except one day, no problems. Any ideas of what could be the problem? Solutions?

    Thanks!

    Thoughts:

    . Check for codes.

. Change spark plugs with the exact plugs that came in the car.

    . Change fuel filter:

. Clean the Idle Air Control Valve/hoses, throttle plate, throttle body, and ports:

    . Change air filter.

If the problem persists, change the Ignition Control Module:

It sounds like the idle air control motor (IAC) has quit working. This controls idle speeds for all functions. Without it, it will just stall.
Many problems with them in the 2001 model year. Very common for them to fail.

Thanks for your answers. It was the fuel pump.

Very rare, especially for a late model Lexus. Genuine fuel pump failure is not common on modern-day cars, even though many mechanics suspect them and have them replaced when there is a fuel-related problem. Most fuel pump problems are related to getting power to the pump; i.e. fuse, relay, switch, or connection. Failure to regularly replace fuel filters, however, can burn them out--still, not a common occurrence.

    Thanks for sharing the solution.

I agree. The repair doesn't fit the symptoms stated here.

If the problem was with the fuel pump, the car would run worse then you step on the gas, demand more[/I] fuel go into the engine, not less!
They may have charged you for a fuel pump and simply quick-sprayed the throttle plate and IAC

**edit** did anybody see the eyebrow go up?
