    Stiff Person Syndrome
I am looking for herbal remedies for this rare affliction. I have a relative with it and I was told its based in the autoimmune system and stress related. I know Kava Kava is a powerful herb for relaxation so I wonder if this is good, along with a detox tea.

Are you talking about scleroderma or something else?

I believe both are related SPS is muscle rigidity in limbs and sensitivity to noise, touch, and emotional stress, which can set off muscle spasms where the person can stiffen up.

Scleroderma is a thickening of the skin and I believe on occasion underlying layers - I know it's autoimmune and a friend of mine has it. It is pretty much incurable and progessive.

I have never heard of SPS but am off to see what I can learn.

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you whether Kava kava is useful in this situation. However, some articles are suggesting kava kava's sedative, muscle relaxant, anaesthetic, anticonvulsive, antixiolytic effects; with further suggestion of a "potentiated GABA activity", while patients usually do have reduced levels of GABA.

But, I have found you two articles, that might offer some useful info:

One from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

    http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/92198627.html

And the other, you might want to look up, the Mayo Clinic's finding of "Long ter remission of Refractory Stiff-Man Syndrome after treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin".

Stiff-Person syndrome is a progressive neurological disease that causes stiffness of the muscle and muscle spasms induced by unexpected noises, touches, and strassful events.

I do not heard of any alternative medicine that might be useful of, but literature states the benefits of physical and rehabilitation therapy. Massage might ease the painful spasms.

Also, for 'common' spasm warm is usually helpful. My mom used the hairdryer to warm her leg muscles when she had a painful spasm.

I sincerely hope you could find something useful info for your relative.

The hairdryer is an excellent suggestion - a dear friend of mine has MS and that's the only relief she gets.

    Excellent thought.

Thank you very much for your kind comment !

Yes, I was fortunate enough to have a very smart, wonderful, warm-hearted mum, who knew a great deal of helpful hints. I am happy to let you know them, if needed.
