    Wage Garnishment from Studen Loans
I just noticed today in my last paycheck my wages are being garnished for student loans. I was trying to go into a payment plan with them but was unable to do so due to financial hardship. I was not notified by them or my employer that wage garnishments were going to begin. I was not notified for a hearing or anything. Although I moved 6months ago I did provide the loan co with my new address and work # so they could contact. Me. Also I was under the impression I had to be at my current employer more than 1year for garnishments to begin. Am I wrong ? Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

No they do not have to notify you, you did not pay them, did not call them and work out a payment plan. If this is a government loan, they don't have to take you to court, don't have to notify you.

Some states require notification of garnishment but there is no penality if they don't. And it does not stop the garnishmnet,

Obviously you never read the fine print in the loan contract you signed. Since this is govt subsidized loan, they do not need to get a judgement to get a garnishment. Nor do they have to notify you when they apply for one. I'm a little surprised your employer didn't notify you, but they didn't have to.
