I have a 2 1/2 year old son he speaks a lot, But latley my husband and I have noticed he has started to studder when he speaks. Example "Mommy wh,wh,wh,wh,wh,where are we going"... It is cute and all we kida laugh because he squints his eyes as he is trying to let out the right words. I don't know if I should be concerned, or not to worry it is just a faze. Can he possibly have some sort of speech deficcency?

Stuttering at this age is perfectly normal. Their brains think faster than their mouths can speak. You just have to remind him to slow down when he is talking.

This is a normal growth and development process.

Oh... we used to just laugh and count the stutters until my son would get what he wanted out. As suggested his brain was working faster than his mouth. UNTIL... my mother came to visit. She made him stop, start over and try again... thus pointing it out to him. IT MADE IT WORSE. I made an appointement with school district and got him tested. He was fine, no problems were detected, and I was given some suggestions on helping this developmental phase along. Number one suggestion was not to call attention to it.

So, if you are really worried, the school district should do early intervention for free. They will be qualified to evaluate your son and give you sound advice.

My son has a stutter (he is 18 years old) but he also has a developmental delay. His doctor explained to us that speech is a motor skill and most likely your son will grow out of it.

Just let him finish what he wants to say without helping him. Try not to laugh at him and if he is still stuttering by age 4 ask your local school system to screen him. He can take speech through pre-school (in larger school districts) so he will be better prepared for grade school.

Most likely he is just thinking faster than his mouth can make the sound. He'll get it right before you know it.

Our 2 1/2 little boy just started a little stutter recently also. But I believe he is just thinking faster than his mouth works right now. He just started really chattering in the last 2 months or so. He's still new at this talking and explaining himself and what he wants thing. Give him a little time. Make sure you are paying attention to him when he talks so he knows you are listening, and he's not worried about having to start over again. Good luck and be patient!!
