Internet on same line as ATM
:confused:okay I work for a convinence store we have an atm and regular landline, the owner wants to get probably at&t dsl but we want the phone and the atm to work at the same time, would a spliter work or would this still cause the atm to not process transactions, or the phone does not work. Please help me out is there anyway to do this other then run a whole new dsl or phone line?

One advantage of DSL is that it works over a regular phone line and allows the phone to work as normal at the same time as you are sending and receiving data. So why not just convert the existing phone line to DSL? You connect both the DSL modem and the regular phone to the same line, although you do have to place insert a filter (which AT&T will give you) in the connection to the phone. Leave the line going to the ATM alone.

Unless I am missing something the ATM shoulld have it's own line. Probably required for security reasons. I have someone I can ask, I think.

The regular line can be converted to DSL. No re-wiring necessary. Well maybe a little. Eith place a splitter in the NID (usually outside) or filters on the phones. You'll need a jack for the DSL modem.

I read this as ATM - Automatic Transfer Mode which is another data method.

    KISS,
I wondered the same thing, that's why I didn't answer. I always figured that ATMs had their own lines to avoid tampering, to assure the encryption of the connection.

Yeah it is on another line of its own we just weren't sure if you could do an internet connection to it but security reasons make since hackers are so smart these days thanks so much he's going to switch the phone to a dsl line and have at&t put a filter on it, gosh what would I do with out you thanks so much have a blessed day.

I really didn't know a dsl line could do both I thought you had to have a phone and a dsl line.

LOL! I had the same initial reaction! But then I realized that since this is at a convenience store it is more likely she was talking about an Automated Teller Machine than Asynchronous Transfer Mode.

    NeedKarma:

There are ATM Kiosks that you find a mall which use cellular modems. Just plug into a 120 V outlet and go.
