Single meter on townhouse for two units. Shut off notice because of other tenants.
We have lived in our unit for over two years. Every 2 months our landlord will call and tell us the total amount due on our water bill because it is in his name. Unit A is suppose to pay half and Unit B pays half. We are unit B. Two previous times we have gotten shut off notices because of unit A not paying there bill. They moved out in October of this year. Last month we got a shut notice for a past due amount of $270.00. The notice stated that if we did not pay the past due amount by 5:00pm that day it would get shut off. It was almost 4 o'clock when we discovered the noticed. It was hanging on unit A's door. We called the landlord and no response. We did not want our water shut off so my roommate took out a payday loan to pay the past due amount. Then our landlord called and said tell them how much they owe us and they would reimburse us. It is now December and they have not reimbursed us. We called them and told them that they owed us the $270 because the past due amount was not ours. We have always paid are bill on time and have proof. They told us that they were not going to reimburse us and that we were going to have to call the old tenant to get our money. My question is how do I get my money. Does the landlord have to reimburse us. The water bill is in his name. We have never been late on our water bill and the people in unit A were constantly late. Had they have still been living there we would have knocked on there door. We have no idea how to get ahold of the old tenants.

The landlord is responsible for reimbursing you. Send them a letter by certified mail that if they do not reimburse you within the next 5 days then you will deduct the amount from your next payment of rent. Also send a copy of the letter by regular mail and make sure you keep a copy for yourself.
