    Dobermans gender and color
I am looking to purchase a Doberman puppy in the next year-I already have a male Havanese, so I was told not to have 2 males in the same household. My question is this
I love the red dobes, but I hear that the red females have the nastiest temperments out of all of the colors-is this true? Are there any better colors/genders of dobes that are better with children (I have 2 young children ages 3 and 9)? I truly want this to be a forever dog-and I need him or her to get along well with kids, cats, and a male dog.:

    Color does not affect temperament.

I've had two males, three males, two females, three females, "mix and match" and I've never had a problem - they sort of set up their own pecking order. No fights, no problems. But I did spend a lot of time getting them accustomed to each other.

I have never owned a Doberman - my neighbor has two and they are both VERY high strung. I don't know if this is the usual but I don't think either one is suitable for a home with children.

Of course, I have German Shepherds and people don't think they are suitable either.

There is a couple in my town who own a store (they are old family friends) and they have always owned dobes. But they have only ever owned male dobes... I know color makes no difference in temperament (they have owned Reds and black and tans) though socialization is a BIG key.. his dogs are store/home dogs where they are in the store every day and the house they live in is above the store. They see tons of people in the run of a day but have a big problem with drunk university students on Friday nights... they know who is drunk and who isn't...

. I've never seen problems with my friends owning two or more of the same sex. Or even mix and matching (my friend currently owns a female rottie, male dobe and a female and male alapha blue blooded bulldogs and he has NO problems what so ever.

Who told you that owning two males was bad?

I have three male dogs, they get along wonderfully.

As long as you neuter your males there shouldn't be a problem. Un-neutered males will be more aggressive.

Also, neutering makes for a healthier, happier, calmer dog.

I don't know much about dobermans, but I do agree that color doesn't matter.

Dobermans as a breed overall take time and work regardless of color or gender. They are intelligent and need early training and socalization. They also have the tendeny to want to be the boss. Dobermans are a sensitive breed that need sensative training. Harsh treatment can quickly result in a dog with broken spirits and often aggression.
