    U-tube with mercury and water
A simple open U-tube contains mercury. When 11.6 cm of water is poured into the right arm of the tube, how high above its initial level does the mercury rise in the left arm?

In the U tube both sides will be of equal weight.
We assume that the start position is that only mercury is available in the U tube.
If you add 11.6 cm of water in one side of the tube, the weight of the water pushes the mercury down, therefore up in the other tube.
The weight of the rising mercury level must equal the weight of the water added in the other arm.

The weight of mercury is higher than that of water. Find the weight relation between the two.
Than calculate how much mercury the weight of 11.6 cm of water represents.

(Note : you have to do your own homework : I just provide you with the explanation how to get to the proper answer !)
