Hello
I am trying to figure out how I should proceed with a major career decision. I have been employed by the same company for 20 years. I was 18 when I started here. I have moved up in the company with a moderate amount of success but have reached a plateau in the company. I have not moved in my current position for 10 years now. I enjoy my job for the most part and have grown accustomed to the security of my position. I am feeling that this is not enough any more and want a change. These feelings are compounded by the fact that my mother-in-law is experiencing some serious health issues in a city that is five hours away. I have looked into the current market in that city for my industry and it does not look very good. I have looked into other industries and have found a few leads for jobs starting in the spring. With the economy in its current downward spiral I wonder if hiring freezes will prevent these from happening.
There is talk of down sizing in my company in the next couple of weeks and they are asking for anyone interested in a package to talk with HR. I am worried that if I was to do this and there was no room for downsizing in my department it may red flag me. Is this a realistic fear or should I go talk with HR? I also wonder if I should just suck it up, go with the security and be happy I have a good job in these times?
Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

Here is my take on the issue. First I wouldn't talk to HR about a package unless you are looking to retire, you probably will get the raw end of the deal. In these difficult times I would stick it out. You have a job that you are comfortable with and pays the bills. Once this economy turns and things are getting better, then make your move. If something unfortunate happens with your mother-in-law in the mean time, you always have the Family Medical Leave Act to fall back on. Good luck.

I'd wait until the recession ends, too. Make sure your resume is in good shape. You can do that while you wait out the economic bust.
