I have read that even though a doctor says you carry your baby for 40 weeks you really are not pregnant the first 2 weeks of your pregnancy so right now I am 14 weeks so really my baby is only 12 weeks right

Never heard of that. My doc told me how many weeks by use of sonogram and measurments of my uterine growth. I never heard of subtracting 2 weeks

There is an extra two weeks because you are counting from the first day of your last period.

I was confused by this as well. Never heard of such a thing. YOu are not really pregnant the first 2 weeks? Ask your doctor as well if he knows exactly. It is an educated guess.

Planned Parenthood says medical and scientific experts agree that pregnancy begins with implantation. It happens several days after fertilization when the developing pre-embryo is implanted in the wall of the uterus. Implantation begins the release of hormones that are necessary to support a pregnancy.

In short, a woman is not pregnant until the developing pre-embryo is attached to her and gets nutrients from her. For example, a fertilized egg in a petri dish does not represent a pregnancy.

Yes, exactly... so before the implantation there is that one to two weeks from the date of your first day of your last period that you are not pregnant that is counted in your 40 week gestation period.

This is what she wrote. I guess I took it literally then, since she is speaking about a "pregnancy". You are pregnant at implentation, what does it matter about the first two weeks.

If you want to get technical about it it can also be calculated as trimesters. This would put her in her second trimester.

The only reason why they use the last menstrual period is because the date of conception is not always known. The date of the last menstrual period is known by most women so doctors use this date as a starting point for pregnancy. Doctors will agree that pregnancies, when using this dating technique, average approximately 280 days or 40 weeks. Less if you have mutiple babies. Twins for example are full term at 36 weeks, again using this method.
