I think that anything that has to do with his mother the relationship they have or had how he feels about her?etc... this I feel gives you great insight to the kind of man he is and how he will treat you in the long run.

When you start a relationship you ask 101 questions to know him. As you prgress you ask pertanent questions about certain situations that may arise.

The mother theory is good, but it can be subjective. Remember you are asking him and not his mother.
