Hi,
I'm a huge fan of instrumental music. Compose a great deal of it myself. The one artist who never fails to move me is Kitaro. Extraordinarily powerful stuff. Lots of orchestration, great exotic rhythms, but with a most definitive rock influence from time to time. The man plays a mean stratocaster! If you really want to be blown away, check out tracks like "Kokoro" or "Mandala."
Another favorite artist is Mike Oldfield. Think the music from The Exorcist, "Tubular Bells", some of his earlier work.
If you're into classical at all, check out "Carmina Burana" by Orff. The powerful opening track "O Fortuna!" has been used in countless contexts, once even used by Ozzy Osbourne to open his shows.
Other classical works I'd recommed: Adagio for Strings by Barber (Think the movie "Platoon"), Adagio in G minor by Albinoni, and Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven.
Another favorite album, if you can track it down, is the music from "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues" by Jeff Danna. Lots of erhu music. A traditional Chinese orchestral instrument, with a tonal quality somewhere between that of a violin and the bagpipes.
Can't help you with bagpipes offhand, but I'll let you know if I think of anything. :)

Great stuff, Thomas.
... and one to add to the list: Wagner's Ride of the Valkyres (the one played in Apocalypse Now when the helecopters were coming in right above the water).
Have a listen here if you don't remember:

Just thought of another person whose extensive and varied work you might check into, that of film composer Ennio Morricone. Very moving stuff with haunting and original melodies. A lot of various work to his credit.

I would have to say that the music to Terminator 2 would definitely be something to look into. I see used all the time at sports games right before they are about to play. The San Jose Sharks used it for many many many years, I actually think they still use it today.

Who is the guy from Africa. I couldn't catch his name for certain... sounds like... Tamari? Kind of like Tamale almost. He mixes African instruments with guitars and Otis Redding and such... very tastefully. He is awsome and I have to have some of his music. Does anyone know?
