I have a Kenmore dryer (86670100). The wire between the exhaust thermostat and heating element thermostat melted. Could the thrmostats be broken?

Usually if it is melted the unit got to hot in that area OR the connections on the wire were loose causing it to overheat OR the wire was to close to the heater.
