Measuring the mile in the gym
Does any one know how many laps a person needs to run in a standard gym that would equal a mile?

Completely depends on the track... you must ask someone who works at the front desk. A four lap track is rather large. The one I use at the Y is ten laps.

An easy way to compensate is to understand your general rate of walking. Hit a treadmill at your walking/running pace and see how long it takes you to go a mile... I know, for ex, that a brisk walk for me will take around 15 minutes per mile... so even if I'm unsure of the distance on a trail or track, I can be fairly close by understanding the general time it takes me to go one mile.

Even when my pace is off, its really not that much different. And if you are just trying to go, say 4 miles, expect an hour of fast walking... and maybe go an extra ten minutes if you feel off.

But really... ask someone at the desk. Someone is going to know how your track is designed... and again, it completely depends on your gym.

The four lap mile tracks are what you see around football fields in high school stadiums. Most public indoor gym tracks are nowhere near this big.

Is your gym at a college/university or is it a pay for use gym? At a univ. you might get a big indoor track (again, often around a football field)... otherwise, you are looking at more laps depending on the specific design of your gym.
