        Habitat for Humanity has stores that sell used building materials, you can often find new and used lighting at very good prices.  Also if you have a Menards near you, they often have nice affordable lighting.  They are similar to Home Depot and Lowe's but better IMO.  Things are usually more pricey from a showroom. 
 
Lastly, consider a ceiling fan :) 
 
I'll add, I don't care for chandeliers in most settings myself, nor do I like ceiling fans with attached lights.  It's an entirely different style, but I think track and/or recessed lighting can add a more modern touch of class, compared to the basic fixtures many homes have installed.
