How to replace rusted toilet flange
Hi I just signed up, hoping someone has some advice for me.
Am the new (starting to be horrified) owner of a 118 year old house, needless to say I have a LOT to do.
I had noticed the downstairs toilet was wet around the base, thought it just needed a new wax seal, pulled up the toilet and lo and behold, the metal flange is rusted and broken, it's connected to pvc pipe. How do I fix it? The plywood floor looks okay so I don't want to take it out if I don't have to. Can I remove the metal from the pvc? And glue a new piece on? How do I get the old metal off?
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks-
    Jane

    Hey wyominjane...

Best option here will be to cut the old metal closet ring off the pvc closet flange using a pair of aviation snips (tin snips) and install a new CLAMSHELL (see picture) type of metal ring back around the pvc closet flange. It is a HINGED replacement ring.. should be perfect fix here! After installing you will need to screw the new ring to floor.

When finished should look like a brand new flange was installed... ;) This type of ring can usually only be found at your local plumbing supply house.

Let me know if need more information here.

Mark gave you the best advice for your problem. Ive never been a big fan of the metal/ring pvc closet flange, because the metal they use, rots out rather quickly once the wax ring has failed. The one good thing about them is, they are easy to fix using a repair flange, as mark suggested. Good luck and please let us know how it works out.
