Can a HOA put a lien on my home?
I haven't paid my HOA fees for this year and received a letter in regular mail saying they've put a lien on our home for $235. We haven't received any form of notification that if we didn't pay this by a certain date that this was a possibility. The last letter that we received was that we were unable to use the common area until it was paid. Can they do this? Should I call the HOA compnay and fuss or contact an attorney?

Read the by-laws of your HOA before you call them or an attorney. Most likely there is a provision in there that gives them the right to put a lien on your home when your dues are more than X days late without any additional notice to you.

Okay so do I just pay it to get the lien off or do I have to go through more extensive steps? Or is it much more than that? Is this something that I would have to go to a Credit Repair company to have removed?

Send a letter to the HOA asking them for the amount necessary to have the lien removed. It will probably be the amount of the past dues, plus the cost of recording the lien (probably somewhere between $20 and $50). When they contact you with the amount, send it to them by certified mail, return receipt requested, along with a letter asking them to immediately remove the lien and provide you with proof that it has been discharged.
