When do I have to give police ID?
I mean, police can ASK whenever they want, but outside of traffic stops or 'ongoing criminal investigations', when am I obligated to provide ID/my name?

I'm aware it's highly suspicious not to, but it's the principle of the matter...

    Thanks,

You need to provide ID (anything but your SS #) whenever you are asked by the police to provide it. Not to do so is suspect, and would lead to a lot of wasted time in the process of not providing that information. I don't think 'principles' come into the equation at a time like that.

You do not have to provide your ID at any time. The fifth amendment allows you to not do anything to incriminate yourself.

However, to refuse to identify yourself would create suspicion by the officers. You would then, likely be detained until your identity can be established. So its generally in your best interests to be polite to law enforcement officers and accede to reasonable requests.

Okay, fair enough. The Fifth Amendment seems to Section 13 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Canada). I agree it makes sense to give your identity. It`s one of those you don`t HAVE too give it, but why shoot yourself in the foot.

    Exactly

And it's a good idea to include a location in your profile for just these types of things. Doesn't have to be specific, the province should be sufficient.
