We moved into our condo a little over a year ago. There is a large, 60" Hampton Bay St. Regis ceiling fan with an upper set of lights and lower set of lights in our living room. When trying to replace the lower bulb, we accidentally installed the wrong wattage bulb (100 watt halogen instead of a 50 watt halogen). After installing and turning on the light, we heard a large "pop" and the lower light and fan have not worked since.

With my dad's suggestion, I bought a multimeter a few months ago for various projects. However, after reading about using the tool and doing some online searches, I spoke to my father again last night. He said that he believes that we probably burned out the motor on the fan and that we should probably just buy a new one instead of trying to fix this one.

We both like the fan and would really like to fix it without having to drag in an electrician. I am willing to do the work but would like to know where to begin and if it's worth trying to fix it in the first place?

The upper bulbs still light up, but are dim. However, the fan and the lower light do not work at all. I would appreciate any suggestions that anyone might have to offer on this problem!

Buy a new fan, it does not sound good that q 100W bulb did that instently. Higher watt is a long run damage. Something else happened there and not sure if electrician will be able to have parts or exess to internal wiring in the fan, too much to take a part.

I'm pretty certain you shorted the remote receiver. These buggers are very sensitive and often go bad for no reason at all, much less an overload.
