Toilets are measured from the center back to the wall and not from the back side. If you're asking how far the tank should set out from the wall the answer is from next to it to a quarter inch out. That's the ideal setting. Regards, Tom

Tom said it... Toilets come with different front lengths. But the most important is the measurement from bolts to the wall.

It depends who you ask in this forum - but generally, manufacturers say 12" from the bolts to the finished wall. That will leave you with 1"-2" space between wall and toilet tank - depending on brand/type/model of your toilet.

Our company always roughs in our toilets 12" from the mud plate (rough framing). That way we have toilet tank nicely flush with the wall.

Sideways, our Code calls for minimum of 15" from wall to the center of the toilet. Therefore, mininum of 30" from wall to wall.

For a standard twelve inch rough toilet, the center of clostet flange will be 12 inch from finished wall. (12 1/2 from rough studs, assuming 1/2 inch sheetrock) As far as I know you can only get 10 12 and 14 inch rough toilets. Please answer milos question.
