I am try to install a ceiling fan. Coming from the ceiling are 2 black and 2 white and a ground. From the fan is a black white and blue. I have it hooked up but the lights do not work and the control for the fan on the wall also does not work.
Any ideas what I did wrong. Thanks for the help. John

Do you have two wall switches (Lights and Fan) or one switch for the entire fixture?

Does one of the White conductors have a piece of black tape around it or black coloring?

Can you determine which of the two cables is for the switch and which is the constant "HOT"?

I got the lights to work by switches the wires,blue from the lights on the ceiling fan to black,now the fan does not work. On the wall is only the control for the fan,on ,off and turning it clockways for how fast you want it to go.
Should the white from the ceiling fan go to the power for the lights,these things really get my goat. Thanks for the help and anymore help you can give. Thanks John

The unit on the wall only contolled the fan. I had power to the fan before I switched the wires around. I now have blue from the fan to black coming from ceiling..

The light was turned on by a chain on the fan. The new fan is a harbour breeze

Ok, let me make sure I understand.

The old fan was controlled by a dial on the wall, the light by it's pullchain.

The new fan, how do you want it controlled? By the pullchains, or the switch? How about the lights?

What make was the old fan?

I would like the fan to work from the switch on the wall and the lights from the pull chain. Not sure who made the old ceiling fan,but my guess its over 30 years old. I'll see if I can find a name on it.

I need to know what type of wall control it is before I can advise on this. Pictures of it and/or the OLD fan would help.

You must first determine which of the black wires in the ceiling is the hot. Connect the hot black and the fan/light blue to the white going to the switch. Connect the fan white to the white in cable that has the hot black. Connect the fan/light black to the black from the switch.

I didn't look at your diagram, Harold, but I assume it's correct. HOWEVER the reason I didn't give him any wiring instructions yet is, I do not know what type of wall switch he has. It may be a type that is damaging to connect to the new fan. Knowing the make of the old fan might give me a clue. So I was waiting for more information before I instructed him to do anything.

The only name I can find on the switch is on the face plate of it. It says solid state. I took it out of the wall,it looks real old. The switch is round with two wires on it and had cardboard around it.

Well EITHER WAY it can't be safely used on the new fan. Disconnect it, install an on/off wall switch in it's place.

What make was the old fan?
