Running 100 amp service wire in the winter.
I will be running 100 amp 4awg copper wire from my 200 amp meter base. The first problem is in the winter time. Is it OK to run this above the ground and dig it in this spring?
Next question, how do I hook the 100 amp wire into the 200amp service? I know there are two sides to hook to, do I just hook to one side on the meter base? Any help would be greatly appreciated since I can't afford to hire a professional. Thanks! |

You cannot afford to not hire a licensed electrician.
The work you want to do involves handling deadly line amperage. Please consider the following. #3 AWG is listed for 100 Amp, not #4. No, you cannot lay the cable on top of the ground while you wait for Spring. |

Maybe I should rephrase this question. I need to hook up temporary power to a mobile home. There is a side in the meter base to hook up temporary power. I have seen some kind of sheilding they use to put the wire in during winter and temporary installations. I know this is dangerous and have the tools and gloves. I hooked up my mothers service box in town. But I am at a loss when knowing how to do this temporary. Thanks for the input and I hope this explains in more detail what I am trying to do.

Please, there are all manner of electrical codes you would need to be aware of for both safety and technical correctness.
Have you asked your local power company if you are allowed inside of their meter to rig a temporary power line to a trailer? Again, this is very dangerous work that you are talking about doing. An arc from the wires contacting touching the wrong spot can severely burn you or outright kill you. Talk to the power company, maybe they can run the temporary drop for you and phase the cost into your monthly power bill. |

We CANNOT tell you what the requirements are for temp power, only they can. Also, what kind of meter is this that there is a space for "temp power". That would be something new to me. There is about .01% chance you will be allowed to simply lay the cable on the ground. Besides, it's SEPTEMBER. When are you intending on doing this job?? The fact that you have the gloves and have hooked up your mother's service does not mean that you have the experience and knowledge to do what you are doing. |
