Yard Machine with 14.5HP Briggs won't turn over
I have a Yard machine lawn tractor that has been running great. Today my wife said it died on her. I tried to crank it and can only get it to turn over one revolution. Have had the battery tested and they told me it was good. Tried hooking jumper cables directly to the starter but have the same effect. Took starter off and hooked it up to jumper cables and it spins fine. Also have a Craftsman mower with same engine. Took starter off this mower and put on mine and still one revolution. I can turn the motor with my hand so it is not locked up. Another thing I have noticed is gas coming out the muffler. This mower has a Briggs and Stratton 14.5HP OHV. Any help would be appreciated.

It's flooding big time. Time to take apart and rebuild the carb as well as clean the fuel system.

If you have lots of gas in the cumbustion chamber, it won't compress hence your one turn. I'll also bet the oil smells like gas too.

You'll also need to take out the plug and put a rag over the opening with the fuel cut off and catch the fuel. Leave the plug out for a while too.

    You have a real mess.

I do thank you for your input. I found an article where some one had a similar problem and they took the plug out and it turned over fine. I have just done that and it does turn over fine. Just need to rebuild the carb and fuel system and see what happens. Is this difficult because I have never done anything like that.

Briggs diagrams are on their website Home - Briggs & Stratton or Parts & Accessories | Shop & Find Lawn & Garden, Appliance Parts at Sears Parts Direct | SearsPartsDirect.com from Sears.

You may or may not need a full rebuild. Age of the mower and whether it's been stored with old gas in can swing it either way.

Rebuild kits are cheap ~$10, but no instructions. Briggs wants you to buy their repair manuals for a particular series.

Small parts you remove, disassemble, clean and install new. Their may be parts left over from the kit.

Adusting the carb can be tricky. Find the diagrams and see if your up to it.

I think the procedure is in the Sticky.
