Hello,
I like this guy but we are 5 years apart in age. I don't even want to get involved if it would be illegal so I need to know that before I do anything. He is 20 and I turn 15 in November. Would it be illegal to date him, why or why not?

It depends on where you live.

You have to ask yourself this. What does a 20 year old have to gain by dating a 15 year old? This doesn't sit well with me.

Check out the laws where you live, but if I were you I'd steer clear of this guy.

Dating is not illegal but it is inappropriate thing to do because you are still a minor. Most important thing, if sex is involved, it means he might face statutory rape and may end up a registered sex offender which of course will ruin his whole life.

By the way, age gap is disturbing in my opinion. If he is 20 and still stupid enough to date a 15 years old without knowing of consequences that might occur, this is not a good sign. You'd better stay away from him.

20 and 14!

This is the 3rd post I have read today with a five year age gap. What is happening out there?


"Dating" is not illegal. Sexual acts most likely will be, depending on where you live. Make sure you know this guy, because it is a risky thing, and to keep self-control with each other is going to be a big task.

I advise against it.
The law is all for "DATING." BUT NOTHING MORE. (for most of North America). I can't speak for Europe, but if anyone else can...

Honestly, ask your parents what they think, as they are the ones who can make a lot of trouble for this fellow, if they choose to. Then it won't matter what the law says, will it?

My best friend is 5 years older than me, but we are both at the same point in our lives. I'm 20 and he is 25. We've both been through college and have jobs. We both support ourselves and can do much of the same stuff together. But it is going to be very hard for you. Even for me... if he wants to go to the casino, I can't join him. If he wants to go to some bars where you have to be 21 I can't join him. Think about how you are going to feel when he goes out everywhere with his friends, and you have no way of knowing what he is going to be doing. I'm not saying it can't work, because I'm hoping it will work between me and my guy, but I'd want you to seriously think about what you REALLY have in common. Why does he want to date someone that is obviously at a different point in their life? I'm not trying to be condensending or anything, but just be careful... I have plenty of my own problems I'm working out with age, I do have the same friends and social circle as him. Good luck.

What makes you think he is even interested in you? A 20 yr old would be very well advised to stay far away from a 14 (soon to be 15) yr old. There is a term for what you are to him, its called jail bait.

There are a number of threads that already answer this question. There are no laws that govern dating. But if you two were to become sexually active, he can find himself in jail for a long time.

Irrespective of that, a 20 yr old is at a very different social level then a 15 yr old. While a 5 yr age gap makes little difference when both parties are adults, when one is a minor, it's a very big difference.

I suspect here that you have a crush on this guy and he hasn't a clue about it. If you were to approach him he would run for the hills (if he's halfway smart).
