My ex wants to give up his rights and not pay child support
Hi I'm pregnant with my ex boyfriends kid and he told me that if he signs over his rights he don't have to pay child support and I was just wondering if that was true in the state of Iowa. Thank you

    Hi, izzymisty!

As far as I know, and I don't have the current documentation concerning this, is that if he is the father of your child, he is going to have to be paying child support whether he wants to give up his rights or not. He is the father of the child, therefore, he is under obligation because he is the father.

I did find information on the following links that might be helpful to you.

    Child Support

    Child Support Guidelines

    Iowa Child Support Laws

    https://dhssecure.dhs.state.ia.us/ch.../Estimator.asp

Hopefully, someone will come along later to explain things better than I have.

    Thanks!

No, it's not true. First, he can't simply give up his rights. Second - if you can get past "first" - and YOU petition to remove his rights, he can't get out of child support.

Of course, you have to establish paternity when the child is born before you can get the support order.

Actually he can give up his parental rights through the courts but as far as child support he has no say in except on how much might not can afford.

Would you please post the State law you are referencing? This same discussion was just had on the legal boards, complete with quoting Statutes, and the research indicated you cannot.

Your info will be helpful -

I don't know what you mean by he has no say in child support "in except on uiow much might not can afford." In the bulk of States child support is by Statute; the parent ordered to pay support has no input at all, other than providing financial info.
