    Suspect I've got a virus
Kids downloaded a file from a p2p network and now my desk top page flashes on and off i.e. the task bar disappears and so do all the icons on the desk top.

They will reappear if I manage to clock on something in time but then everything disappears again.

Updated avg free and started searching but as it missed the file to begin with I'm not hopeful

    Any help appreciated

    Running xp2 an Sp2

I'd try an online scanner to be sure.
I find TREND MICRO HouseCall 6.5 does a good job.
Make sure you disable the install AVG first or it will take ages.

AVG missed it but ran avast and it came back with a nasty burger called win32.ctx which it couldn't repair.

    Any ideas welcome

I always set my AV to DELETE on discovery.
    Forget trying to repair/clean.

Tried trend housecall it came back with a time of 1.5 days to go through the system. That was with everything I could think of disabled. Haven't got the patience for that

I'll run avast again and get it to delete the files this time.

    Cheers
