This is August and you are in Michigan, so I would suggest skiing would be good for you, HA HA
Really sun rays are strongest in May and June, by late August it's much harder to even get burned. You have to use a low spf product to get color, the higher rated sunblocks will give better protection but also no tanning. What you use depends on your skin type, how fairskinned you are.
You could try the beach or lakeshore if you must tan, or putting your chair out on a light colored reflective flat roof or deck. I don't tan, I wear long sleeves and long pants and a wide brimmed hat yearround, but seems like I always have roofing repairs to do and then everyone remarks on how tan I am.
