If you had a default issued 3 years ago can the creditors still apply for a judgement after all this time? This would mean the debt being on my credit file for another 6 years can they do this?

If you did not respond and they pursued it they got a default Judgment against you. That's what a Judgment is - an award by the Court against one of the parties.

They didn't get "something" which was later turned into a Judgment. They got a Judgment.

Whether they pursued it or not is up to them. They have (depending on the State) a number of years to pursue you for the amount of the Judgment and the Judgment can then be extended at least once for the same period.

I've seen credit bureaus pick up the Judgment once, for the original period. I've seen them pick up the renewal. Depends on how alert someone is.

Most judgements last from 7 to 10 years and normally remain on your report for 10 years. They are allowed to get another judgement at the end of that one normlly.
