Collection agency calls me today say I have a judgement for $811. Charge off date was 2000. Judgement was 12/7/2004. Judgement was placed in NYC courts, I now reside in GA. I never knew anything about this... They said they can garnish my wages and that I shoul dhurry and make payment with them right now. I asked them to send me written information and I would proceed from there. They couldn't even tell where the judgement was from or what state all they had was a docket number. Reason knew is beause I pulled my Experian and it is on my report.

How should I proceed, should I proceed? LOST!!

Ok, charge off is merely an accounting term and has no bearing on this at all. The judgement is what you have to worry about, if you were not properly served you may get the judgement vacated but you will have to file an motion in that court. It is unlikely a collection agency is going to be enforcing a judgement, ** they may be a fake agency wanting to cheat you when they say a judgement on your record.
But if they are you have a right to ask for verification of this debt and if they contacted you by phone, a legal collection agency has to send you a written verification of the phone contact.

But if you have a judgement they will be able to get a garnishment or attach your bank accounts in GA

If they can't give you any qualifying information and can only produce a docket #, then I would forget it until they call again. You must insist on written confirmation. If they can't produce then tell them to go jump in the lake. That is my take on collection agencies and I have said it before.

They have probably bought a few of them that could not be collected by original collection agency.

They had a old address and I didn't want to give them mynew address, so they could trace back to me, as it was shown they didn't really know where I was at, if they had that old address. Should ii call back and give them my correct address?

Now that I think about it, this is probably about the 3rd or 4th agency trying to collect on this.

If the judgement was in 2004 and its now 2008, does it really take this long to garnish $800??

Never knew about this judgement until I saw it on only one of my credit reports.

Calm down, It takes time to get an answer. If a judgement has already been entered they can hound you until they get their money. Most judgements last at least 10 years
