I live with one of my friends who has a basset Hound. Not sure how old but he's full grown. We just moved in together a few months ago. The dog previously lived in a house with my friend in which he was restricted to one small bedroom in the house due to his family members having other dogs in the house in wihc he didn't really get along with. Now the dog has free rein in this house and last night he walked in my bedroom with me in it and peed on the middle of the floor. Then went into my room mates room and peed on the floor right in front of him. Dog just walks off like he did nothing wrong. This dog also likes to push down the safety gate we have in the kitchen and somehow open the fridge and eat whatever he can grab. And I can't keep him off the couch no matter what I do. I've tried sprays which don't work at all. My roommate will feed him food off his plate or scraps or whatever you want to call it. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with anything or not but I would like to know. Ive had quite a few dogs in my life and never have I ever had any problems like this with my animals. So before I loose my cool, (this has been going on for months) and move out I would like some suggestions on what to do. Hes a good friend of mine and I don't want to leave him hanging with all the bills by himself but I cannot tolerate this animal any further. The fridge stuff happens almost everyday the pee thing just happened last night for the first time that I'm aware of. Usually when he does something wrong ill just put him in his kennel for a while because I don't really know how to punish it without it causing more negative behavior. Any help or explanations would be great. Thanks in advance

The problem is... it's a bassett hound. Had one myself. Dumbest animal I have ever owned. Had the same problems... just a big dumb oaf. Sorry... but the dog will never learn. We tried for 3 years to make it do SOMETHING right... never happened. Gave it to friends who had huge property and other dogs.

Sounds like he has the run of the place. You have to make him understand that he is not the head of the house, he's a follower. The best thing I can tell you is to watch an episode or two of the Dog Whisperer and you'll know what I mean.

My two dogs when we got them would pee all over the place too. We had to tell them no and put there nose to it. Finally we got them to were they would go on those puppy pads. The male dog we had to get him a small/toy shock collar because he still wanted to pee all over everything but eventually between teaching them to go on the puppy pads and also letting them go outside they learned that if they have to go go on there pads. But they usually go outside if we are home. I think also that you need to get one of those shampooers that completely wash the carpet because one of mine would find the same place to pee each time and I cleaned the carpets completely and would notice if she went to her spot and take her out then. Another thing that worked with my dogs is that if you are not home get baby gates and block off an area for them. I put ours in the kitchen where we have no carpets and such and they won't go on lenolium so they have to go on the puppy pads.
