Steering wheel tremor
This ones for any mechanics out there.
I recently bought a car, and when travelling at 65mph the steerin wheel starts to wobble uncontolably, and the tremoring gets more violent with increasing speed. What does this mean and would it reduce traction on the road?
Thanks a lot

Wheels need balancing, this will cause steering wheel to wobble and vibrate at certain speeds, also wear and tear on your tyres... need to get it check

To give the complete story, I crashed the car from what I thought was me aquaplaning on a puddle, but in hindsight it might have been due to the steering problem. Would it be possible that the wheels not being balanced caused the car to lose its grip on the road?

The Fact that your wheels/tryes aren't right means that there probably worn unevenly, which could in fact cause a problem especially in wet weather.
You need to sort that asap.

After a crash, you should inspect for any possible damage to the wheels or the tires.
Even a slight impact to the tire's sidewall could break a belt and cause a wobble or tremor.

So you recently bought the car, and more recently you hit something. Like a curb?
So much can go wrong with the slightest hit. I'm agreeing with all of the above, but mostly get it checked asap!

I had the same thing with an old car with manual rack and pinion steering. Started at about the speed you sugested and effectivley oscillated back and forth. Replaced the rack. Fixed.
Had the hydroplaning issue too, separate problem, same car. Switched to Pirelli tires from Dunlaps. P4000 then P400. No problems. I swear by those tires anymore.
And Kitch, a Toyota. Not that it matters.
The wobble will cause you to loose traction.

I had a similar problem, turned out to be my ball joints. But it could be balance and tires too like suggested above, get it checked out, most places will do that for free.

Cheers guys, yeah I bought the car and a couple of weeks later hydroplaned, hit the kurb and damaged it pretty bad. I will get it checked. Thanks again

Hello I just bought a really cheap 1990 Chevy Beretta. Seems to go fine but the steering is really tight and seems messed with, and the ignition is shot, I put the key in and have to almost force it out. How much do you think it would run me to get these both replaced. Also for some reason the...

On my 1998 Buick Park Ave the tilt-wheel will no longer change positions. A couple of days ago I got in the car, adjusted the steering wheel and heard something Pop.
Since then, the steering wheel will only stay in that position.
Does anyone know how I might go about fixing this problem?
