Showed a drain which seems to be similar to the one in our 20-year-old shower stall. The ceramic coated steel base seems to be held (?screw fastened) onto that format of drain head (seeming to be of cast iron) by a large aluminum drain ring. I'm tempted to try to unscrew that aluminum ring by placing a 2.75 inch piece of steel so that it will use the protrusions into which the two drain-cover screws go when I turn that steel insertion counterclockwise. (We'd like to un-install the enclosure to get at the cold water control area in the wall and then re-install it later.)

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Hi:

You can't just unscrew the shower strainer... you can remove the screws to remove the strainer... but can't remove the drain/strainer assembly itself.

What does, "We'd like to un-install the enclosure to get at the cold water control area in the wall and then re-install it later"... have to do with the shower strainer?

Are you suggesting that you would like to remove the entire shower enclosure... walls and floor... to get to pipes behind the wall... and then reinstall the unit later?

If this is the case, remove the strainer and see if there is a lead (silvery) ring around the pipe. If there is then you want to get a drill bit about 1/4" to 3/8"" and drill through the lead about an inch deep a few times and then use a screwdriver to PRY the lead ring up and off the pipe... there will be oakum under that will loosen after that by moving the unit back and forth a bit...
