NOT WORKING!!
It's 6:30am, I haven't slept all night, and I'm puking, and my nostrils are burning so bad I can hardly stand it anymore. Niki wants me to comfort her, but I'm gagging so bad, and everytime I touch her, I smell more like skunk!! I'm about to freak!! Oh my good God! This skunk had super power smell!!
Niki's eyes and nose have got oil running out of them. I've cleaned her face many times already! Grrrrrrrrr!! This smell is going to be in every crack and crevice for ages!! Nik was only out for about 10 mins., and minding her own flippin business!
Oh Starby!! I can't believe that happened with the skunk. Bathe Niki in tomato juice. It may take several times but it should help. I am so sorry! Niki must have really gotten it up close!! So sorry! As if... you know, you didn't have enough to deal with right now..

Oh I'm so glad that made you laugh Sneezer. May a thousand skunks invade your underwear, and call all of their friends over for a party! :p
Rebby, tomato juice really doesn't work. What seems to work is dishsoap, vinegar, and baking soda. This isn't the first time Niki got sprayed... just first time this year. Yes she did get it right up close. That is how I got the smell all over me. I ran out to see what she was barking at, and I grabbed her and the oil from the skunk got all over me! Poor Nik couldn't even open her eyes to see where she was going, so I had to carry her in. I don't have a bathtub, only a small shower stall, and Niki is terrified of water! It's too hard for me to get Niki into the stall.
So I have to do it outside with the hose, and since she runs like hell every time I even get close to the tap, it is hard to even get started without a second pair of hands to help. A friend of mine said she is going to try to make it over after work tonight to help me out. Then I have to find something to get the remainding skunk smell out of me and the house! Uuuuuurrrrrrggggggg! I'm calling the city tomorrow, and I'm going to put in a formal complaint about the skunk problem in this area... again! I did it last year, and managed to get them to put out at least a few traps. I HATE SKUNKS!

Oh it's baaaaaaaddddd Sneezy... really, really baaaadddd! Niki went into convulsions and had to be rushed to the vet last yr. It's a smell like no other smell!! It's bad enough if you just smell a skunk that has sprayed in the neighborhood, but when you get spayed up close?. it burns your eyes, your nose, you can hardly breathe... etc. That is why I was puking this morning. It's such a rancid smell, and you feel like you can't even breathe!
And it's an oil! It gets everywhere, and you can't get rid of it!

A couple that I know had a skunk get under their house. It sprayed under there. They used tomato juice and soaked their clothes in it. It didn't work miracles. I am glad to know of something else. We live sort of in the country with wooded acreage all around.
Do you mix all three ingredients you mentioned?

What has worked the best for me, is "Dawn" dishsoap. I wash Niki with that first. Then I make a paste of the baking soda and vinegar, and rub the through her fur really good, and rinse, and repeat the whole process two, sometimes three times. Then when she's dry, I dump more baking soda all over her, and brush it through!
Right now I'm Febreezing her... lol. I have to do something, and I can bathe her by myself!

Removing Skunk Odor
Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc.
Q. My pet got sprayed by a skunk. How can I get that smell out?
A. Cause
Contents of the anal glands of the skunk are sprayed onto the pet.
General Information
The scent of a skunk can not only be powerfully malodorous, but also very irritating to the eyes and mucus membranes. The secretions contain multiple chemicals. One group, the thiols, are responsible for most of the strong scent. Others are acetate derivatives of these thiols. They are responsible for the smell, that tends to linger and become worse if the pet becomes wet.
Toxic Dose
Not applicable
Signs
Of course, the most obvious sign is the smell. The pet may roll on the ground attempting to rid himself of the smell. The eyes may water, and the pet may be nauseated and retch.
Immediate Action
Either use a treatment specifically formulated for use on skunk odors like Skunk Kleen or Skunk-Off, or use the following formula:
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap
This recipe can be doubled for bigger breeds.
Wet your pet down and work the mixture through the pet's hair. Leave it on for three to four minutes and rinse. This will generally need to be repeated several times. Be sure to throw away any excess mixture. Do NOT get any of the mixture in the eyes; as a precaution, place protective ophthalmic ointment in the eyes.
Note that the above mixture may bleach the hair color temporarily until the animal sheds and new hair grows in. Common antidotes like tomato juice, vinegar, or regular shampoos will not be as effective.
Contact your veterinarian, if the eyes are severely affected, or the pet continues to vomit or retch.
Veterinary Care
General treatment: Bathing with a special formula will continue, and the eyes will be flushed with water or sterile saline.
Supportive treatment: Medications may be administered to help with the nausea, if present.
Specific treatment: None
Prognosis
Good

Not yet my love. I will only wander when I'm a spirit, so you are safe for now.
All you others, Thanks so much for your warmth and love and I give it right back a hundred-fold.
Don't worry about any odors, my sense of smell has not worked right for a long time and I don't think it will ever return to it's full ability. Although, I think I would have been able to notice that skunk essence - so sorry that happened hon.. hope things are better now for you and Niki..
One thing I did read up on - new retirement laws state that my medical disability as it stands right now should allow me to get full retirement pay instead of only the portion I am getting now, so when the Oncologist and Pulmonologist write up their diag/prog reports, I will reapply for full retirement benefits... cross your fingers for me please! These kind of 'benefits' are well hidden in small print, but I found the right legal site by mistake.
C.U. later my dears.. going to try and sleep a little now.

Thanks M! I really appreciate that! I didn't think of adding hydrogen peroxide to the dish soap and baking soda mixture. I usually do add vinegar too, and although the fur smells like vinegar afterwards, it's a helluva better than skunk.
I have got some polysporin that I think I will put in her eyes to protect them. It took her a long time to even open her poor little sore eyes. :( I didn't even get sprayed, and my eyes and nose are still burning, because I was trying to help her, and got the oil from the spray all over me. I feel so bad for her, because on top of the skunk smell, she thinks I'm angry with her! :( She is such a friendly dog, that she sees another dog or animal, and she wants to play! I hate it that she gets so skitish and afraid when things like this happen. She tends not to trust anymore.
Last summer she got sprayed by a skunk probably half a dozen times. This neighborhood is skunk infested. I have called the city a ton of times, and they always say they will bring traps, but it usually doesn't happen. She hasn't vomited so far, although I did a few times (I know TMI, lol) and I do still have some of the antiseptic soap and cream for her nose from last summer. The thing with their nose is, it gets so chapped, and then it loses it's color, and they also end up with sinus problems.
I have flushed her eyes with water, with a large syringe that I got from the vet, after she was attacked and I couldn't get her to drink. (she didn't like that one bit) So I hope the little I was able to do, soothes her eyes some. I thought about using Visine, but then thought that was probably not a good choice. I don't have any saline solution, and wouldn't want to try and make my own concoction, for something like that.
I can't bathe her without someone else here to help me, because she is so scared of water. A friend thought she might be able to come and help, but she hasn't called back yet.
Urrrrggghhhhh! I hate it when I can't do anything to make Nik feel better!
Oh crap... that was a little long wasn't it?? Sorry! ;)
