What's a good replacement pump and filter system
I just bought a used pool recently. I found that the pump is damaged and the stand pipe for the sand filter is broke. Obviously, I need to replace things. The system was a Waterway. I have been told that this is not one of the "better" brands. What brand filter and pump should I go with? The pool is a 24' round with 52" side walls. I'm not sure what gallon capacity this is, but what size system should I look at? I am still learning about this stuff, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Most of the "above ground" labeled equipment is the economy line. With a couple of adaptors that you can buy at most hardware and building supplies, you can adapt the flexible hoses to "inground" equipment.

I prefer Sta-Rite pumps. They are much easier to work on than others in my opinion. Even the cheapest line of Sta-Rite "Duraglas" is a quality product. You can use any brand of sand filter, or de filter with it, and you'll have a much more serviceable system. I buy from our local wholesale suppliers, so I really can't guide you where to go to get them locally. The capacity of your pool is about 1900 gallons. You want to size your pump to your filter. A 3/4 hp Duraglas should do nicely. You can couple that with a 20-24" Cristal Flo sand filter, or FNS 24 DE filter, and you'll have a system that will last for years with proper maintenance.

Technically, you could go smaller than 3/4 horsepower for circulation. But, going smaller means that you'll have less suction for vacuuming. Also, I don't recommend 2 speed pumps, since they have circuit-boards in them to enable changing speeds. You can put the 3/4 hp pump on a timer and run it 2 hours a day. That will turn your pool over twice at 40 gallons per minute. I would set up a timer to run an hour in the morning, and an hour in the evening.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.
    Good Luck,
    Al
