    Peace lily
Hello! I am new here and I really hope I can learn how to use! I have a wilting peace lily and I think I moved it into too big of a pot. Can I plant something in with to take up some of the room instead of moving a stressed plant? If so, what else could I put in there? Also, is it better in the shade oudoors or sunlight indoors? Some of the leaves are yellow, should they be pulled or cut? Can you tell I've never owned a finicky peace lily? This plant is from a recent funeral so it means a lot to me. Unfortunately, life has consumed my time until now so I haven't cared for it the way it needed. So, your advice is much appreciated!

Hello mamakelly,. Spathiphyllam Wallisll = Peace Lilly

This is not only a lovely plant but also is one of the air purifiers according to health researchers...

It is basically an indoor plant, which likes to be kept warm and very humid

Site: bright indirect sunlight to dark shade.

Temp: Keep warm especially over the winter months... approx' 60* F

water: well during summer months, less in winter, be sure and mist leaves regularly to keep up the humidity, you can also wash its leaves.

Feed: each month in growing season.

I've just given you a few tips above to help you care for this lovely plant , at the moment though it sounds a bit poorly.

Have you been over watering it ? Yellow leaves is a classic sign of leaving it to go very dry and then giving it a sudden rush of water, it needs to remain moist and not be allowed to totally dry out.

Have you given it a feed?. perhaps it has been left in a area where the temperature drops,
These do require quite a large pot depending on the size of the plant, otherwise it can become pot bound,a plant will only grow if the roots have plenty of room, so I would be surprised if it was the pot.

Feel the compost if you think it is very wet, then do not water any more until it's been allowed to dry out,put it in a warm bright position, you could leave the leaves, to just dry up on their own or you can take them off if their already dead.

At the moment I wouldn't recommend planting other things in with your peace lilly see if it starts to pick up first.

It will take a while but as long as you keep it in the sunlight and warm with humidity it should recover.

Keep me posted I'd be really interested to hear how it progresses.

    Goodluck.

Ooo thank you! I'm happy to say that I read with some hope in your words. I checked the compost, which I used the organic blend of miracle grow, and it feels good and moist. The room is the "Florida room" which stays about 78 but doesn't get full sun, but is a bright room. I think she got too much full sun initially and also a sudden watering, as you mentioned. Since it is in such poor shape, how long should I wait to mist? I replanted her about one week ago and I thought that had food in it, no? So should I feed now--and what/when? I have two little boys that I can raise---but plants are a weekness! Thank you sooo much for your helping move me in the right direction!

    Hello mamakelly,

As long as the compost is moist that's fine, you can usually tell when water is needed because the leaves will droop slightly, once watered after a while they will stand up again.

You could feed once every two weeks, that should be sufficient to provide any forth coming flowers, a standard fertilizer should be OK, miracle grow would make one, just follow the instructions on the box, don't over do it though
I think the full sun, may have been the problem, this will scortch the leaves, they like brightness but not direct sun.
This plant will benefit from high humidity levels so misting twice weekly will help.

Going back to the pot issue, lillys like to feel quite snug and comfy in their pot, usually a couple of inches either side of the root ball, if the pot is really big I wouldn't move it just yet, wait until it settles down after all it has only been a week.

    Hope this helps

    Bye for now

Hi mamakelly... a very important point,. peace lilly, comes under the TOXIC PLANT LABEL,

Don't worry, just remembered that they are not good if eaten by children or animals.

I don't think they'd want to, but just thought you should be aware of this...

    Bye for now.

Well, I finally have something to report. She seems to be doing much better and today I happened to notice more progress than all the past weeks combinded. The stems in the center of the plant are just about all standing up and the leaves 'look happy'--as my 2.5yr old said. I pulled most all the dead stems out--some didn't want to go. Her recovery is due to your help and suggestions! I think I'm going to start taking pictures because it is awesome to be a part of watching her come back to life! Thank you again soooo much!
