Sweet sort of urine smell in upstairs bedroom
We have an old house and every so often... I think it's when it's windy or warm... there is a sweet urine smell coming from the far corner of the upstairs bedroom.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

    Thanks

bubblingtoilet, I would hardly call the scent of urine 'sweet'. That is a tough question. Have you tried washing the area with pinesol or something similar ?

Washing the floor was the first thing I did. It's coming from the floor boards I think. There is an attick space behind the wall but it specifically is coming from that corner. The smell is not quite a pungent as say cat urine and it comes and goes. I noticed it this morning and it's rainy and windy today.

    Thanks for you post.

I recommend renting an ozone shock treatment machine. I'm in the water treatment business, and use ozone as water/ pool treatment frequently. That has caused me to venture into the air treatment side. It is amazingly effective. You could run it in that attic.

1- a leaky toilet gasket now or in the past has allowed the floor sub-floor to become saturated with urine, and the corner is the low point. Bleach is about the only thing that you'll be able to saturate it with. Or, you could try a pet odor removing enzyme like "urine off" If this is the case, it could be deeply penetrated in the wood which would require saturation of whatever chemical you use. If you use bleach or chlorine, be careful, the gas that forms can be hazardous.
2- something behind the wall in the attic such as a wild animal, opossum, or rat. If you were to evacuate the animal, then you could ozone treat the area.

If you do chlorine, or ozone shock, be careful. Allow the areas to vent well before being in them very long.
    Good luck,
    Al

Thank you all for your answers... we found that when a mouse is in the attic the smell comes through that corner. Mice stink! So from now on when we smell that, we will expect a mouse in a trap...
