Everyone, I need your help, and I need it yesterday.

My daughter found a baby bird on the sidewalk in front of our house. It has almost all it's feathers, just the head isn't yet covered and of course some of the feathers under the wings etc. I think it may be a chickadee, not sure though. It has a broken wing and I have no idea were the nest is, even if I did, the mother would most likely reject it, because of the wing.

So, it's in a rubbermaid container on top of my heating pad. I've raised baby birds before, but never a wild bird and I have no idea what to feed this little one.

I have a picture, but it's not very good and the flash scares him/her, so I don't want to take another. Any help would be apprecitated, I'd like to keep this little one alive.

Awwww... Sydney is trying to save a birdie. You know that bird sanctuary that we talked about before? Could you maybe try calling there? They might know what to do. All I can think of is the basic worms and bugs... I don't know!! :( Maybe some one at the SPCA might have some ideas?

Good idea Starby, I'll try the spca, and the bird sanctuary. Also going to call my Uncle, he's raised wild baby birds many times with great success. I just want to keep this little one alive. When I picked him/her up he/she snuggled right into my hand and peeped at me. We already named it, so I'm doomed. Squeakers, that's the name, and we have to keep Squeakers alive. Ahhhhh, as if I don't have enough problems. ;)

If it lives I will keep it, unless it's wing heals and it can fly, then I'll release it.

Called the bird sanctuary, now I'm mad. First they gave me crap, fledgling birds often leave the nest before they are able to fly, momma will continue to feed it, so I should just put it back. It was on the sidewalk in front of my house, there are kids (and I can guarantee they won't leave it alone) and cats (can you say lunch?) and other things around, yesterday there were two young hawks in our neighborhood, this baby would be a tasty treat. Also, the wing is broken, there's crusted up blood on it, looks like the poor wee bird already ran into some trouble.

After telling them all this, they asked if I knew what type of bird it is. Best guess, chickadee or finch. They said they could come out Friday at the earliest, as it's not a rare species and therefore not top priority. Ahhhhh! They said not to handle it too much and not to attempt feeding it. How the heck is it supposed to live till Friday without feeding it? Then they hung up. Didn't take down my address, nothing, so I guess it's up to me and me alone.

I will call my Uncle tonight, see if he wants to take this on. He's raised many wild birds, so he's the one to call.

I've tried rescuiing baby birds before, my success rate isn't good. I did hand raise on of my baby finches, she was only 1 hours old, momma kept tossing her out of the nest, so I took over. She lived, and became very tame. I'll do my best, cross my fingers, and hope. That's all I can do. :(

    Thanks guys.

It was probably some airhead receptionist that hates her job, and can't be bothered. Hopefully your Uncle will be able to help you out.

I think I know what it is. A yellow breasted finch. He/she is so precious, I'm already in love. God help me if it dies. :(

Do I need electricity.. None on this island Flyer.

I mentioned in the other thread Flyer that I will be in your neck of the woods for two weeks. We are leaving Chicago next Monday for a short two week vacation to see the family and relax...

Alty - I hope you got an answer this aft... I've nursed a lot of wild crotters back to health but the only non-mammal infant was a snake. All the birds I've nursed were grown. If I couldn't find someone who knew, I'd head to pet store and see what they had to say, or buy finch food, grind it w/ mortar and pestle, add water (or reconstituted powdered milk) to make a thin paste and feed with a dropper. But that's just a guess on my part.

Good luck to you and Squeakers. (I call one of my cats Squeaky because that's the best he can do when trying to meow <G>)

She actually found out the specie of the bird and is now feeding him dog food (not sure why, apparently... you do) and the bird is now eating. Hopefully it'll recover soon.

Apparently the dog food has all the nutrients that a baby bird needs, I know, weird, but that's what my Uncle said and others, so I'm going with it.

So far Squeakers is doing very well, he has spunk so hopefully he'll pull through. From what I found on the internet I would guess he's around 10, 11 days old, hopefully the wing will heal, mother nature is a wonderful thing, so I'm not counting him out of potential release yet. His feet seem to be messed up, dried up blood on one leg, but I'll give it some time. Worse comes to worse I end up with another pet, jeesh, really kids, I could sell tickets to my house. ;)

I'm going to have a few restless nights until he can eat on his own. Every three hours for a feeding, it's like having a newborn baby again. Yawn! :);)

    CBW, missed you again. :(

Unfortunately little Squeakers passed away some time last night, it's for the best, I know that, still telling my heart that, it's not working so great.

Feeling allot better, still sick, but much better than before. Thanks for asking. :)

Alty - you sound as tolerant of critters as my mom was. At one point we had a cat, a green finch, a goldfish, a bowl of tadpoles, a wounded pigeon, 3 baby motherless rabbits, a snake we caught from the creek, and 3 white rats. We even managed to get the bunnies and pigeon healthy enough to set free.
