Hello. I have a situation where my mom has been living with me for some years now and it seems she has suffered from a stroke. I've noticed that for years now, she's been having outside conversations with herself, which I believe she may also have dementia. I suggest many times for her to get a check-up but she refuses to go. I feel that she can't take on the full responsibilities of caring for herself. I am the sole caregiver. What should I do? Can I obtain legal guardianship of her without her going to the doctor? I need help.

THis is a difficult situation, you could apply for guardianship ,but it would have to go through the courts which would take some time and you need to give this immediate attention.

You could however seek out a solicitor (lawyer) who deals within this area of law for the elderly, it just depends where you live.

You are already your mums carer so techinically nothing need change, there are various organizations that will be glad to advise and help you with your mum, specialized agencys that deal with the aged, if you contact them... their number is usually in the phone book, they will refer you to someone who can monitor your mums condition and advize accordingly on hers and your welfare.

My advice would be to go to the family Doctor alone and explain the situation, tell him your fears and the fact that your mum refuses to visit him, he may decide on a home visit, once he arrives, you'll probably find your mum will be just fine with it.
