Would we be able to rent a home after bankruptcy?
My husband and I are planning to file bankruptcy on 60K of unsecured debt. My husband, since meeting with the atty also wants to file on our first and second mortgages. He is currently employed but his job situation is not that secure (he holds the "last hired" position in a small family owned firm. If he lost his job we would most likely need to move out of state for him to find something in his narrow field of expertise. His desire to include the house in the bankruptcy rests on that "what if" as well as the reality of current real estate market conditions (nothing's selling in our neighborhood.)

So, my question is this, if we file on the house, will anyone rent us a house? We are in Michigan if that makes a difference.

Yes they will rent you a house. There are a number of potential creditors out there who will not do business with you for any number of reasons, but tell you it is because you filed bankruptcy. It is a stick that you can be beat with, if you let it. During this period where you anticipate filing Chapter 7 and including your home, save your money to where you may have six months of rental, ready and willing to pay to a landlord if that is what it takes to get into the home. If you are interested in a single family dwelling, look for an owner/landlord who wants to rent with an option to purchase the property.

Yes, there are some places that will and there are others that will not.
And as noted even the places that say they won't, if you pay enough of the rent up front they often will
