    Where to rough in?
I need to get my shower valves roughed in before the sheet rock guys show up. But I haven't selected tile yet so I don't know what my finished wall depth will be. Is there a safe guess? How do plumbers rough in this stuff on new construction? Seems you wouldn't always now the exact tile or what size trowel a tile guy would use?

    Thanks

Normally, your faucet/fixture will come with rough-in schematics. Otherwise, you will need the faucet/fixture to figure it out. Do you have access on the other side of the wet wall?

Most wall tiles are 1/4" thick, making the total wall thickness 3/4". There is usually a reasonable amount of adjustment to the trim parts of a faucet.

Every faucet has about 3/4 to 1" of play. If you have German, French or Italian faucet than you must be careful. They don't offer too much to play with.

But, install rough. Then test-install trim. See how much play you have. Then, move faucet in or out as needed.

Ask your tileman how he plans covering up your walls. If he plans on floating it, allow 1 1/4". If he is using backing board, allow as hkstroud suggests.
