Hi,

I am having some tile installed in a bathroom tomorrow. The existing
Floor is vinyl, so the floor will be raised about a quarter inch from it's
Present location.

To save a little money, I said that I would remove the toilet myself as I
Have done a few times before. However, when I got to the floor flange
(PVC), I realized that it was not screwed down, but rather it was glued
Onto the PVC pipe. Now I am stuck. The house is on a slab, so there is
No going underneath it to cut the pipe and patch it. I do not have time to
Bust out 4" deep hole in the concrete and replace it.

Would it be wise to cut off the outer part of the existing flange, and
then add a new one inside the old one? The PVC pipe is 4". The existing
Flange is inside the pipe.

Any help would be appreciated.

Take alook at this post, and some others in the similar questions area at the bottom of this page. Sorry, I don't know the answer but similar questions have been asked here. Apparently there is a flange extender you could use, so you won't have to remove your existing one.

You can add a PVC flange spacer for about $2.00 at most home centers. Oatey makes a variety of spacers. Closet Flange Spacer :: Oatey.com

Thank you for the responses. I had searched around the site before I asked the question, but I could not find any that actually fit my exact problem.

The flange is on top of the existing vinyl floor. I assume that I would need to remove the existing flange in order for the tile to be installed. So, it is not a matter of extending the flange, but rather removing the old flange and replacing it.

Maybe, I should ask a different question. Is tile normally installed around the flange, or under it? I was thinking that they had to install the tile under the flange, and thus my question about removal. If is just around the existing flange, then I may need to look into the extender kits.

No need to remove the old flange. Have your tiler tile right up to the edge of the old flange and then you can add the spacer. Your tiler should know how tight to keep his tiles but I'd recommend that there be less than an inch gap between the tiles and the old flange. A competent tiler should have no trouble with this.
