    Redwood, cypress and cedar are all insect and rot resistant. Treated lumber will actually last longer than those woods though.

    amricca's right. But remember that even cedar is merely resistant. Termites and carpenter ants can infest it. Even railroad ties eventually can be food for termites. Carpenter ants are found even in woods that termites leave alone since they don't eat the wood but merely hollow it out.
