    Pre-diabetic and pregnant
I have been diagnosed pre-diabetic within the past few months. Now I find that I am pregnant.
Any suggestions on what cautions I should take? Also, being that being overweight is the main reason for being pre-diabetic is it OK to start exercising in addition to eating better when that can cause weight loss? If the weight loss is OK during pregnancy how much is considered OK (healthy)?

You have some very valid questions. I salute you for looking for some assistance during your pregnancy. However, these are questions you need to discuss with your OB/GYN. Without knowing your medical history it can be dangerous to the health of you and/or your baby to advise you as to weight loss during pregnancy.

I will say that you need to watch your diet, stay away from sweets, starches, etc. Eat healthy, take your prenatal vitamins, and make sure you get enough folic acid.

Hi, I was border line Diabetic when I was pregnant both times, best advice I can give you is this:

Stay away from a lot of breads
Stay away from a lot of pastas
    Stay away from sweets period
Stay away from sodas even diet
Stay away from a lot of potatoes

All these things turn to sugar and can be very harmful. Also, it's a good idea to get something you can test your sugar with, it comes in handy.

While not technically trying to lose weight during pregnancy, it is very wise to be exercising both for the pregnancy and for the potential of holding off the diabetes. You can certainly watch your weight gain in the pregnancy and be sure you do your best to keep it within the guide line your doctor sets for you. General guide is about 25-35 pounds, but now it is known that it would be even better to be on the lower end, especially when you are overweight to start with... 25 pounds or a bit less.
The diets for diabetics would be a good place to start... eating small frequent meals/snacks throughout the day to keep blood sugar levels from fluctuating, avoiding processed foods and simple sugars as much as possible, watch for hidden sugars in foods... corn syrup, high fructose, any other "ose ingredient, balancing carbs throughout the day, plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grain products, fish, etc.. It really is a good diet for anyone to follow actually and will keep you feeling well fed, while not piling on the extra weight at the same time.
I assume your doctor may have you monitoring your blood sugar levels as well, this can help you to see just what foods, how much, and when you eat them can effect your levels so that you can adjust accordingly. If they haven't set it up for you, you may want to inquire about meeting with a dietician to go over meal planning. Ask about exercise programs in your area for pregnant women... many places will have yoga, water exercises, etc. that you might want to check out.
