I recommend starting with the Self Directed Search, and using it as a starting point for your investigation. It's a preference-based test which will tell you what careers would be a good fit for your interests. From there, you can explore the skills and training that would be needed for the careers that piqué your interest. You can take this test (and read more about the test) for 9.95USD here.

Another approach that's often used by career coaches and counselors is personality-based. For example, if you're an extreme extrovert, a career spent in a cubicle with little people contact would probably not be a good match.
